Selection of Commission Executive Director

The Commission's legislation requires an Executive Director as staff to the Commission. The Executive Director is chosen from among detailees from the agencies and organizations represented on the Commission or on the Commission's Advisory Board. Commission personnel decisions must be made by the Director of the NASM, the NASA Administrator, and/or the FAA Administrator pursuant to section 7(h) of the Centennial of Flight Commemoration Act, as amended.

Dr. Sylvia K. Kraemer, a NASA employee detailed to the Commission staff, served as interim Executive Director from February 2000 through September 2000, and the Commission wishes to thank her for her dedicated service.

In September 2000, the Centennial of Flight Commission requested that NASA detail Ms. Sharon C. Foster to the Commission staff to serve as Executive Director. Ms. Foster has a long and distinguished career in government service, having joined NASA in 1973, and served the Agency in a variety of positions. Most recently, Ms. Foster was the Director of the Management Operations Directorate at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. She has received numerous awards from NASA, including the Exceptional Service Medal and the Outstanding Leadership Medal, and has twice been honored with Presidential Rank Awards for her accomplishments in the Senior Executive Service.

The Commission looks forward to Ms. Foster's leadership in this key position in FY 2001.
