A diverse number of organizations are joining forces to
give children and families a unique window on this year's Centennial of
Flight Celebration.
Passport to Flight, an exciting new program for children and their
families, will kick off at Carillon Historical Park on April 6 with an
event from noon to 4 p.m. Sixteen sites with ties to aviation and space
or with flight-related exhibits have joined the American Institute for
Aeronautics and Astronautics to create the Passport to Flight Program.
The participating sites will have exhibits and activities for the
families, with formal opening remarks taking place and door prizes to be
awarded at 2 p.m.
Admission to the Passport to Flight Kick-off is free and open to the
public. Those participants wishing to tour Carillon Historical Park that
day may purchase a discounted admission pass for 50 percent off the
regular admission prices.
The Passport to Flight Program is designed to promote young people's
interest in aviation and space sciences as they visit the various sites.
Officials have developed a commemorative passport book and a unique
colorful sticker, with copies of both to be available at each site for
children in grades K-8. The stickers are to be placed in children's
passports to confirm that they have visited the site.
Children who visit at least nine of the 16 sites will be eligible to
return a page from the passport to the local American Institute of
Aeronautics and Astronautics Section where it will be entered into a prize
drawing. Every participant returning the passport page showing they
visited 9 of the 16 sites will receive a commemorative Passport to Flight
bag tag (for their school book bag or sports bag), a certificate of
completion and will be entered into a grand prize drawing.
Participating venues are: Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm, Boonshoft
Museum of Discovery, Carillon Historical Park, Cincinnati Museum Center
Dayton Art Institute
Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, Greene and Montgomery
County Public Libraries, National Aviation Hall of Fame, Neil Armstrong
Museum, Paul Laurence Dunbar House, United States Air Force Museum, WACO
Historical Society, Wright B Flyer, Wright State University Special
Collections and Archives.
The Passport to Flight program is supported by grants from the AIAA as
well as support from the Air Force Association; Universal Technology
Corporation; Skyward, Ltd.; and the National Park Service.
