World War I Aviation To Roar To Life At U.S. Air Force Museum

Dayton, Ohio
Aug.29, 2003

In a year when America is celebrating the Centennial of Flight, the United States Air Force Museum will host a major outdoor flying event reviving the sensory drama of World War I aviation.

In partnership with the Great War Aeroplanes Association, the museum will host one of its most popular major events, the Dawn Patrol Rendezvous World War I Fly-In Sept. 12-14. Action will take place 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. all three days.

Widely considered one of the nation's premier historical aviation events, the Dawn Patrol Rendezvous will feature vintage original and reproduction World War I aircraft taking off from and landing on the museum's front field.

Full-scale and 7/8-scale aircraft will perform precision flying in the skies above the museum and will compete in flour bombing and balloon busting exercises.

Additional activities will include flying exhibitions by WWI radio-controlled aircraft, era automobiles on display and participating in a parade, and period re-enactors in a war encampment area. Those attending can "swap and shop" for WWI items.

The last Dawn Patrol Rendezvous at the museum took place in Fall 2000, drawing approximately 30,000 visitors for the three-day event.
